“All I Need is a Hug” Cape Making Workshop - 01.02

Sharing experiences brings immense comfort. While pills, patches, and Pilates for brain fog, unruly emotions, and changing body types are helpful, what every woman truly needs during this time of uncontrollable frustration is an old-school “stitch and bitch.”

This is a three-hour workshop where women are encouraged to bring an item of clothing, such as their favorite pair of jeans that no longer fit, to cut up and hand-stitch into our community cape. This cape will travel with me between workshop locations, symbolising our shared journey and support.

The “Say It Like It Is” T-Shirt Printmaking Campaign - 15. 02

After spending seven years trying to tell the doctor I had perimenopause, after so many tests, when she finally agreed with me she expected me to burst into tears. I just wanted to say " I told you so!" So I made a T-shirt instead.

An all-day workshop where participants use felt to craft an outrageous "brain fog" hat full of the forgotten things and frustrated feelings to be paraded proudly at the final soirée.

Botanical Blue Gums: An Introduction to Watercolour with Hayley Carpenter

October 26th, 1-4pm at Hahndorf Academy

$80pp

Enjoy a relaxed afternoon in our vibrant new Bukatila Studio, using premium watercolour materials to paint detailed blue gum leaves and blossoms, guided by watercolourist Hayley Carpenter. This workshop for adults is generously paced to allow for experimentation and one-on-one guidance. You'll leave with your own, personal rendition of the iconic native flora to frame or gift.

Hayley is a south Australian watercolourist and owner/creator of portraitsbyhayley. A multi-disciplinary artist, she initially trained as a glassblower at UniSA graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Arts, Honours. After having her daughter in 2019 she picked up the brush again and found a passion for watercolour. Hayley is primarily a commission based portrait artist but has recently debuted in her first solo SALA exhibit UP/DOWN; and everything in between. Interested in both contemporary realism and illustration she is constantly exploring the boundaries of watercolour; a notoriously challenging but beautiful medium. Luminosity and layer building are prevalent throughout all her work.

Bukatila Studio is located at the rear of Hahndorf Academy, access is via the carpark, adjacent to Balhannah Road.

You’ll be in the gallery amongst Naomi Hobsons amazing photographs of kids exploring their wonderland. Be inspired to design your own zine and include yourself, family, friends or places that hold special memories - where you live now, places you visit often or places you dream of visiting. Anyone can make a zine! You can take your zine home!

Wear your practical art making clothes and you also get chance to use the photo booth with dress ups!

Zine fun facts…

People have been making zines since the invention of the photocopier by Inventor Chester Carlson.

In the 1930’s it all started with sci-fi fanzines - the first one published was called Comet.

In the 1940’s Lisa Ben produced “Vice Versa”, the very first U.S. periodical published.

In the 1960’s Rock fanzines were born with “Crawdaddy!” “Mojo Navigator”, “Rock and Roll News” and “Who Put the Bomp”.

In the 1970’s the punk subculture in the U.K. kick started a wave of fanzines challenging established print media like “Blam!” and “Bombsite”.

Zines are like the tangible Twitter and they’re having a comeback. Zine libraries and festivals are appearing around every corner.

Claire Wildish is a community artist and Artist in Residence at the Ruby Award winning U City Arts Studio. Before moving to Adelaide in 2016 she spent five years living and working in the remote Western Australian Indigenous community of Irrunytju where she learnt the secret art of listening and storytelling. Her two extraordinary children taught her how to make zines and from their breakfast table publishing company they cut and paste strange characters on wild adventures in search of cockroaches, cucumbers, dead potatoes and ice cream dreams.
