Rachel McElwee

Director

Rachel leads the growth and development of the Hahndorf Academy as a vibrant centre for arts and heritage in the Adelaide Hills. Under her leadership, the Hahndorf Academy has become the second most visited gallery in South Australia. Rachel is passionate about community engagement, fostering connection through dynamic programs, workshops, and volunteer initiatives.

She champions contemporary artists through a diverse and inclusive exhibition program and plays an active role in both the arts and broader community. Her responsibilities include strategic planning, tourism development, and building strong partnerships and collaborations that enhance Hahndorf Academy’s impact across the region.


Sienna Blok Retail Manager

Sienna is responsible for managing the Hahndorf Academy Shop which showcases work by South Australian artists and makers. She maintains and develops relationships with suppliers and supports them in business and design. Sienna is a practicing artist with a Bachelor of Contemporary Art and Bachelor of Art and Design (Honours). Her practice is now focused on exploring themes of Australian iconography through the medium of linocut printmaking.


Joseph Steed

Programs Officer

Joseph is responsible for Hahndorf Academy’s various programs including ceramic and art workshops, museums tours, events and more. Joseph also handles marketing for these programs and events. Joseph is also a practicing visual artist, photographer and retoucher with a Bachelor of Contemporary Art and Bachelor of Art and Design (Honours).

Susie Duggin - CHAIR

Susie Duggin brings a background in governance, cultural strategy and public institutions. With experience across arts, government, education and research sectors, she is passionate about supporting regional creativity and ensuring Hahndorf Academy continues to thrive as a dynamic space for artists and community. Her leadership focuses on sustainability, collaboration and long-term cultural vitality. 

I live and work on unceded Peramangk Country and Kaurna Country. I honour the continuous connection that First Peoples maintain with lands, waters and skies. 

Wen Dixon-Whiley - DEPUTY CHAIR

Wen Dixon-Whiley is a self-employed Illustrator and Visual Artist from South Australia. In her freelance practice she has worked with a diverse range of businesses in industries ranging from craft brewing and hospitality through to government and the health sector. She has also project managed a number of community art and youth development programs in collaboration with local councils. Prior to this she worked in the arts and not-for-profit sector. With a Bachelor of Illustration Design and Master of Visual Art and Creative Practice and a Diploma of Creative Arts in Health underway, Wen has participated in multiple group and solo exhibitions and works from her studio at the Hahndorf Academy where she has been working from for 9 years and has been a Board Member since 2023.

Ros Cameron

Ros Cameron is an Aboriginal cultural educator, storyteller and emerging artist based in the Adelaide Hills. Ros draws on lived experience to guide her work. With more than 17 years in Aboriginal education and community engagement, she supports cultural learning and wellbeing through the arts, strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities through shared creative experiences.

Ros facilitates community initiatives including Flaxley Woven – Reconciliation through the Arts and Wellbeing on Watta, an Aboriginal women’s arts and wellbeing group. Her creative practice explores a sense of memory and connection to Country. 

As a member of Hahndorf Academy Board, she advocates for inclusive cultural representation and meaningful community access to the arts.

Mike Greenwood

Mike Greenwood qualified as an engineer in London and later became a trainer of engineers. Followed by working as a program designer and facilitator where he developed peoples’ negotiation and influencing skills through his own company which he founded in Sydney in 1991. Mike moved to Hahndorf in 2007. He has served on the Board of the Hahndorf Academy Foundation for 14 years, twelve of those as its Chair. His interests are in video and audio arts; in the cultural history of Bukatila (Hahndorf) and in the heritage of the Hahndorf Academy building. With a German born grandfather, Mike is currently tracing his family story which now extends to a grandson growing up in Los Angeles.

Kristy Carter

Kristy Carter is an Organisational Psychologist and Founding Director of Heart@Work. She specialises in leadership development, systems alignment, and cultural transformation, helping organisations create unity between strategy, systems, and culture to deliver sustainable performance and measurable outcomes. Kristy is a descendant of the Pfeiffer family, one of the original Prussian settlers who arrived in South Australia aboard the Zebra who built the village known as Hahndorf. She acknowledges the Peramangk and Kaurna people as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which Hahndorf stands – Bukatila - and honours their enduring connection to Country. She values both the region’s deep Indigenous heritage and the legacy of resilience and community stewardship that followed.

Patrick Bugeja

Patrick Bugeja is the Public Programs Coordinator at the State Library of South Australia. He began his career in Canberra, working across cultural institutions including Canberra Museum and Gallery as an Education Officer and Front of House team member.

With a background as a classroom teacher and visual arts educator, he later joined the Centre of Democracy at the State Library of South Australia as an Education Officer, and also worked front of house at the Art Gallery of South Australia and Ayers House Museum with the National Trust of South Australia.

As Visitor Experience Manager and later Team Leader of Engagement at the National Trust of South Australia, Patrick led dynamic programs and events that activated heritage sites and connected diverse audiences with South Australia’s history. He now also serves on the board of the Hahndorf Academy, where he brings together his passion for history and the visual arts.

Lisa Liebelt

Lisa Liebelt is an experienced executive and community leader with a background in sales strategy, stakeholder engagement, event management, and cultural advocacy. With over 20 years’ experience across the craft beverage and wine industry, health sector, event management and small business, she brings a collaborative and outcomes focused approach to governance and strategic planning.

Lisa’s family live on land settled by her husband’s forebears, Prussian refugees who arrived on the Zebra in 1839. She acknowledges the original custodians of this land and respects their enduring cultural heritage.

Lisa looks forward to contributing to the Hahndorf Academy Board, providing support to our local arts community and ensuring the continued relevance of this iconic South Australian gallery and museum.

We also have a valuable team of volunteers who contribute greatly to the running of the Hahndorf Academy through supporting our retail operation, helping with exhibition installs, gardening, general maintenance, administration and assistance in our collection.

Volunteer Coordinator

Join our vibrant team!

Hahndorf Academy is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to steward and sustain our vibrant Volunteer Program. As a not-for-profit organisation our friendly and supportive volunteers are integral to the success of our organisation and to our connection with the artistic and Hahndorf communities. This position will coordinate and recruit volunteers, empowering volunteers to work within their skillsets in our art galleries, retail shop, museum and on the grounds of the building and garden.

The Volunteer Coordinator role is a volunteer position, suitable for someone seeking to gain or build upon their experience within the arts and tourism sector; or an experienced professional who is looking to give back to the community.

Volunteer Retail Assistants

Join our friendly team as a volunteer retail assistant and experience the hustle and bustle of this tourist destination in our amazing shop, where we showcase handmade, and SA made art and gifts.

Experience is required in a customer-facing role and experience with computers is preferred. Our ideal candidate is friendly with a positive attitude, good people and communication skills, smart appearance, and an eagerness to learn. Training is provided working alongside our Retail Manager.

Volunteer Museum Tour or Welcome Guides

Are you interested in history and storytelling?

We are looking for volunteer museum tour or welcome guides to engage visitors with local history and culture. Including stories about the Peramangk and Kaurna people and Bukatila, the German Settlers, and early Hahndorf life.  

We are looking for people who are interested in history and who want to give back to the community by volunteering in our heritage museum. Our ideal candidates are friendly with good people and communication skills and smart appearance, and who enjoy meeting people and want to feel part of a team.
