The ‘Artist’s Voice’ was formed in 1997 and is an association of visual artists based at the Hahndorf Academy where it holds regular exhibitions in the upstairs gallery.

Group and solo exhibitions are also held at other venues throughout the state.

The Artist’s Voice was formed so that local artists might share resources, ideas and enthusiasms and to raise awareness of local art and artist’s within our community.

Most members are established artists with many enjoying considerable reputations throughout Australia.

The Adelaide Hills Landscape Arts Prize is a biennial non-acquisitive contemporary art prize, established in 2017 by the Hahndorf Academy. In 2019 the Prize is presented in partnership with Beyond Ink, architects, and in association with The PaintBox, Hahndorf.

South Australian artists are invited to present work that engages with and interprets the Adelaide Hills and the diversity of the landscape. We invite artists to interpret their experience of the Adelaide Hills in ways that highlights and captures their awareness of its dynamic and diverse environment and landscape – natural, rural or urban – and its ever-changing seasons.

A live camera obscura can be experienced for the duration of the exhibition

ROBYN STACEY: RAY OF LIGHT

Using the camera obscura Sydney-based artist Robyn Stacey depicts South Australia as it has never been seen before. Translating from Latin to mean ‘dark room’ the camera obscura is an optical device of wonder, whereby the external world is trapped and inverted within the room.

For this exhibition, eight large-scale camera obscura photographs by Stacey will be on display. First shown as part of the 2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Magic Object, the photographs depict camera obscuras at well-known sites around Adelaide, including the Brookman Building at the University of South Australia, Carrick Hill, The Cedars at Hahndorf, the Institute Building, The Lighthouse Wharf Hotel in Port Adelaide, Parliament House and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI).

In the artist’s words these bewildering photographs become ‘a mash up of inside and outside’. ‘The magic of the camera obscura is that it makes us question what we take for granted - the everyday experience is presented upside down and in reverse, mimicking the way an image forms on the retina. In some photographs cars drive over the ceiling and the sky and clouds cover the floor… it’s like being in a movie where you are in the world but removed from it at the same time,’ says Stacey.

Robyn Stacey’s camera obscura photographs will be on display at the Hahndorf Academy from Saturday October 19, 2019 – Sunday December 8, 2019. A live camera obscura can be experienced at Hahndorf Academy for the duration of the exhibition.

The regional South Australian tour of Robyn Stacey: Ray of Light is presented in partnership with Country Arts SA, the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Regional Galleries Association of South Australia.

Painted Stories Workshop Sunday October 20 see details below

Painted Stories shows how artists and Elders are using their paintings, artwork and songs to pass on their knowledge of language and country to younger generations. The exhibition showcases the artworks, stories and films recorded by Aurukun and Pormpuraaw artists as part of an ongoing project from Aurukun, Cape York Peninsula, to support language revival and maintenance through artistic practice. Painted Stories highlights the role of art in the creative transmission of linguistic and cultural knowledge and tells the story of the project from 2012–2019. Combining methods from art therapy and language documentation the project aims to reconnect links between community, country and languages in First Nation language revival work and supports the languages Wik-Mungkan, Wik-Ngathan, Wik-Alken, Kugu Uwanh, Kugu Mu'inh and Kugu Muminh.

Painted Stories Workshop at Hahndorf Academy

Sunday October 20 at 12.30pm – 3.00pm

The visiting Aurukun Artists, Art Therapist and Linguist from the Painted Stories exhibition will facilitate a Painted Stories workshop at Hahndorf Academy.

The artists will demonstrate their artwork and mentor participants to work with canvas and paints to create their own personal Painted Story and to share their recollections about country, language and sense of place. Participants will have access to recording equipment and techniques to document their paintings and record their accompanying stories.

Tony Maniaty is a Sydney based author, journalist and photographer, academic and reviewer, who works across a broad creative canvas.

Ed Douglas is an Adelaide Hills artist who, as an art educator for 24 years with the South Australian School of Art, helped to influence the rise of artists engaged with photography in South Australia.  He studied visual art in San Francisco, near where he was born, and received his Masters Degree in Fine Art there in 1969.   His art is included in major art collections in Australia, the US, and Europe.

He says that, 'Art, the contemporary and historic entity, and life, aspects of being human in an increasingly complex and vulnerable world, are the subject matter that most interests him. 

In the late 1930s his father bought a wooden drawing board when he began studying art in college.  Ed grew up knowing that board to be a part of his father's studio.  In 2014 when his father died in California Ed sent the board home to Australia where he is now using it as an element in each image of the series.

Pleased You See Me is a group exhibition.

What goes on inside the mind of another person is always a mystery, but our voices, hands and hearts bring that mystery to life in ways that give our lives meaning and connection to others. When memories fade and word begin to fail, life is no less meaningful and many people find new, creative and often joyful ways to express the thoughts and feelings that make them the unique individual they are.

This exhibition celebrates the strength, resilience and creativity of people living with dementia in our community. It celebrates abilities and draws on some of the skills and life experiences that have contributed to the depth of character and personalities behind the individuals who have contributed to this exhibition. Their creative endeavours have enabled them to remain active and engaged as well as provide opportunities to experience joy and pride in their achievements.

We are very proud to share this selection of works as part of dementia awareness month 2019.

Touched

Touch can be a sensory experience, a language of compassion, it can represent friendship, love, support and care. Touching someone else’s life is a privilege, it is rarely a grand gesture but a series of small acts. Each pompom in these works was created by someone who has either been touched by dementia or has touched the life of a person with dementia in our community. They illustrate the diversity and magnitude of small acts that together can accomplish great things. Hidden amongst the jewel like colours are forget me not flowers, the floral symbol of dementia.

James Dodd has a practice that meanders across a range of different outcomes.  He has a curiosity for machines, tinkering, backyard adaptation and the way in which these things might be incorporated into a visual arts practice.  This exhibition includes a selection of recent paintings created as part of Dodd's Painting Mill project alongside a number of contraptions that are part sculpture, part tool and part performance prop. 

James Dodd will be offering a workshop during the period of the exhibition.

Join artist, James Dodd, for an adventure into making machines that make art.  The workshop will explore different ways in which kinetic movement can be turned into drawings, paintings and sculpture.  Participants will get to develop, make and take home their own art machine.

A workshop suitable for ages 8 and up - there's hot glue guns and sharp knives involved.  Younger participants will need to be accompanied by an adult for this art adventure.

The 6th Exhibition of the Friends of the South Australian School of Art celebrates our community of members artists of The SA School of Art at UniSA, including students and staff . This is a biennial exhibition which celebrates our connected and diverse community of artists in South Australia.

 

About the Friends

The Friends of the South Australian School of Art (FSASA) aim to promote the work, history and development of the South Australian School of Art, using the outstanding expertise, experience and collegial nature of its past and present scholars and staff.

 

The ‘Friends’ are a volunteer run organisation with a focus on providing scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students at UniSA. Although our contribution towards fostering the arts may be small, it is a worthy one, one that adds to the matrix of support towards the development and support of the arts in our community.

Willow  pattern  submerged  in  political  jibes,  classic  urns  decorated  with  lyrical  portraits,  garniture  figurines  poised  in  confrontational  narratives,  Wedd’s  work  is  a  day  at  the  beach  -  with  a  smash  of  home-baked  reality  pie  in  your  face for good  measure.  Traditional  ceramic  styles  imbued  with  meaty  metaphor  and  peppered  full  of  personal  gusto  burst  the seams  of  this  solo  exhibition  of  new  and  staple  works,  showcasing  the  breadth  of  this  iconic  artist’s  career.

Gerry  Wedd  enjoys  a  national  reputation  in  Australia  for  his  hand-built  blue  and  white  ceramics  that  brim  with  a  dry  wit  oscillating  from  the  humorous  to  darkly  disturbing.  From  his  beginnings  at  the  kitchen  table,  guided  by  his  Mother’s  hobby-obsession,  through  to  formal  training  at  University  of  South  Australia  and  his  studio  tenancy  at  JamFactory, Wedd draws his craft out of his own inspirations, interest and experiences.

EXHIBITION OPENING Saturday May 11th at 12pm

In this exhibition, South Australian artist Kunyi June Anne McInerney draws upon childhood experiences as a member of the Stolen Generation in the Oodnadatta Children’s Home during the 1950’s. Kunyi’s vibrant use of colour, facial expression, and depiction of landscape document her memories and reflect on the strict life with other mission kids who became her only family. Kunyi’s paintings and stories reveal an often-invisible part of Australian history.

In the artist’s words, Kunyi says “these are my stories from a dry remote place where my experiences were so different from what Australian children know today. I want to tell my story, so they don’t ever do it again. They took away my family, my culture and who I could have been. These are not fairy tales, they are true. I want people to understand what happened. Painting is the best way for me to tell my stories.”

Kunyi June Anne McInerney: My Paintings Speak For Me is a sensitive exploration of the experiences of cultural loss, separation from family, and finding fun times amongst hardship.

History is a complex recollection of events, where forgetting can be as important as remembering. Somewhere embodied in the stories that people tell is the life and achievements of Nurse Bertha Emilie Schmidtke. This year marks the 100yr anniversary of this remarkable woman, whom against all odds established the Ambleside Maternity Hospital in what is now the Hahndorf Academy, South Australia.

Artist Deborah Twining attempts to unravel the truths that wrapped up her world. In the process give some narrative to Nurse Schmidtke’s valuable but largely unrecognised achievements.

This exhibition is a collaboration between Kiri Kiri Art, Hahndorf Academy and Aboriginal artists from across Australia, bringing together a celebration of art and culture from remote art centres to local suburban artists.

Prior to establishing Kiri Kiri Art Gallery in Victor Harbor, Director Helen Johnson enjoyed 7 years as Art Centre Manager for Iwantja Arts, APY Lands, South Australia.

Kiri Kiri Gallery sources directly from remote art centres all around Australia, particularly within a 500k radius of Alice Springs, reflecting Helen’s passion for the Central Desert Art Movement. On display are some of the most prestigious established and emerging Aboriginal artists in Australia.

The exhibition Renaissance Goes Pop is a confluence of the art of the Renaissance with Pop Art of the 20th Century, which imbues the portraits of the 15th Century with the carnival aspects of Pop Art and its bold riot of colour and mood of determined optimism.

Each of the large paintings is an unpredictable alchemy of motifs emblazoned in a mix of primary colours enhancing the intrigue and humorous cocktail of this interesting body of work.

John Ashcroft (Senior) is a Melbourne artist, his works are full of colour and vibrancy which matches his passion for art.
