Wrinkled Roses and Fine White Grasses - an exhibition with Garden as Muse

This suite of paintings from the studio of Sonya Unwin opens an expansive world where the garden and surrounding hills landscapes provide an ever-changing theatre.

The artist harvests colour like light - bold, generous, alive.

Rhubarb reds glow amid sunlit greens, shaken with cool violets and shaded with gold. The unexpected juncture of hues connect across canvasses showing the luminous beauty of the Adelaide Hills landscapes and her untamed garden.

Unwin paints what the landscape feels; her garden, a portal to colour, memory, play and abundance. Depth is suggested through layers of gestural colour while loose brushwork invites the eye to wander, pause and be surprised.

Often painting en plein air, Unwin works within the landscape itself, allowing the shifting light, changing seasons and passing weather to become part of the process. There is a sense of joy in these works, a poetic celebration of the ordinary made glorious.

In this artists world, nature is never still, it is always becoming, always offering another flash of seeing.
