Artist Talk with Laura Wills

Join Laura Wills for an artist talk

On Thursday November 30 at 6.30pm

(With a glass of wine and late night shopping open till 8pm)

Winner of the Hahndorf Academy Adelaide Hills Arts Prize 2017

Laura will talk about her art practice and her inspirations with images to give you an overview of her work and arts practice.

The Adelaide Hills are a special place for me. I grew up in there, in Piccadilly and in Crafers West and my mum now lives in Stirling. I went to school there too, so many adventures were had. I now live at the bottom of the hills in Tusmore, and regularly hike and mountain bike in them. Morialta First Falls is a favourite walk for our family, I created this work when I was researching Adelaide creeks and waterways. I am interested in the relationship indigenous peoples had with them, the colonial settlers and present day relationships. Who owns the creeks and whose responsibility is it to look after them. Laura Wills

IMG_4481.jpg

Artist statement for her winning work 'Fall'                            Overlaid into a map of Adelaide and Mount Lofty Rangers, this is an interpretation of Morialta Falls. Morialta Conservation Park is a protected area 10 km north-east of Adelaide city centre. It is part of the River Torrens catchment and set in a rugged bush environment, with narrow gorges and three waterfalls, bounded by steep ridges and cliffs.

Laura Wills is a visual artist based in Adelaide, Australia. With a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Applied Design from Adelaide Center of the Arts (2003) she practices a diverse range of media from painting, drawing and photography to installation, media arts and community projects. Wills has a strong interest in using found materials, collaboration and basing projects on social/ environmental themes. She regularly exhibits and has received numerous grants, awards and residencies locally in Australia and overseas.

Students will be guided to work on their own comic strips using the demonstrated techniques using large sheets of paper as they draft out ideas and stories for their comic book character followed by laying out the comic, penciling the work and text, adding texture and finally inking the work.                                                                                        Students will be encouraged to continue to develop their comic books and stories at home with a workbook of ideas and tips to assist them, with a take home pack.
